back有名词、形容词、动词和副词四种词性，在用作副词时表示向后；在后；在背面的意思，用作动词时表示使后退，倒退；帮助；支持的意思，用作形容词时表示背后的；后面的；后部的；过去的的意思，用作名词时表示背部；脊梁骨；后部；背面的意思。
一、back用作副词
back用作副词的基本意思是“往后；在后面”，也可引申表示“忍住；恢复”或“上溯”。注意如果动词本身已经表达了“相反动作”的意思，就不能再用back。

三、back用作形容词
back用作形容词时在句中只用作定语，不用于比较等级。另外，back在语音学中也可表示“后元音的”的意思。
