"Next to" and "beside" are both prepositions that indicate proximity or position of one thing relative to another. However, there is a subtle difference between the two:

1. "Next to": This phrase implies immediate adjacency or closeness. It suggests that one thing is directly adjacent or immediately following another thing. For example, "The bookstore is next to the coffee shop" means that the bookstore and coffee shop are right next to each other, sharing a wall or a boundary.

2. "Beside": This phrase also means being in close proximity, but it does not necessarily imply immediate adjacency. It suggests that something is located near, but not necessarily touching or immediately next to another thing. For example, "She sat beside her friend during the movie" means that she sat close to her friend, possibly in the same row but not necessarily directly next to her.

In summary, "next to" emphasizes immediate adjacency, while "beside" implies relative closeness without the requirement of immediate adjacency.
