Some CLSs have an interest in research. There are opportunities in medical research laboratories, industrial laboratories and laboratories the developing equipment or test kits/reagents for clinical laboratory use. The background and knowledge of the clinical lab that the CLS possesses proves invaluable in developing new products. They provide input on all product aspects from an experienced use’s point of view. Cytogenetic technologists may also work in research laboratories where cytogenetic techniques can be applied to basic science research.
CLSs also work in less traditional work settings such as in veterinary offices, in laboratories of large marine amusement parks, in forensics laboratories associated with the medical examiner or state police, or in industrial testing or food testing laboratories. Many have developed their own consulting businesses to help small physician office laboratories adhere to rigorous inspection and accreditation requirements. Some have become coordinators for large multisite clinical studies. Others have become inspectors, educators or laboratory managers. The emphasis on meeting federal and accrediting agency requirements has created a need for those with knowledge of the laboratory to be inspectors. The focus on safety and protection of workers from hazardous materials has given some CLSs the opportunity to enter the field of occupational safety or infection control.
Some laboratory personnel leave the laboratory environment and move into the corporate world. They may go into sales or become a technical representative who trains personnel to use the corporation’s equipment or troubleshoots equipment problems. Some may become interested in marketing. Those with an interest in computers may work for companies selling/installing laboratory or hospital information systems or may be the laboratory specialist in computer systems. HTs and LTLs work in laboratories of firms that manufacture or process chemical or pharmaceutical products. Cytotechnologists may be employed in hospital, private reference laboratories or research facilities. A few may find positions in education or industry.
Graduates of CLS programs may choose to get advance degrees in a scientific discipline, in management or in education. Some also go on to medical or dental school. The broad, general scientific background of the CLS is an excellent knowledge base for any of these professional programs.
