1. Which translation app is the best?
Trados stands out as a leader in the field of Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, partly due to its powerful functions, but primarily because of its early establishment. As other CAT tools emerged like mushrooms after the rain, Trados maintained its dominant market share, unchallenged. However, during the process of using it to translate documents, we often encounter various problems, which can sometimes result in the inability to translate or import the translated document back into the original format, causing significant inconvenience to translators and project managers. The name "Trados" is derived from the combination of three English words: translation, document, and software. The letters "TRA" correspond to "translation," "do" to "document," and "S" to "software."
2. Translation of Word files with Trados is reliant, but its TagEditor is very powerful and can serve as a platform for translating most file formats. However, the actual reason for Trados' acquisition by SDL in June 2005 remains unknown.
SDLX is another impressive translation tool, powerful in function, but it started much later than Trados. As an independent platform for translating all file formats, the original and translated texts are displayed symmetrically, which is very intuitive. All operations can be completed on one interface, allowing for real-time viewing of the source and target files. This feature has many advantages over Trados, although there are still shortcomings, such as the MDB format for TM and the tool's limited ability to recognize complex codes within files. After the successful acquisition of Trados, SDL was further strengthened, leveraging Trados' sales network and reputation to expand its market and enhance its visibility.
3. In 2009, SDL Studio 2009 was launched, combining the strengths of SDLX and Trados. For more information, you can refer to my other original article. However, the built-in TagEditor in SDL Trados 2007 included in SDL Studio 2009 was disappointing, with slow performance — sometimes taking up to 3-4 hours to open a TTX file.
4. Dejavu is a rising star in the CAT field, offering powerful file processing capabilities, an independent operating platform, and a symmetrical and intuitive interface. It accepts TMX format TM and has an excellent built-in QA feature. The main drawback is the excessive code, which can be challenging to handle. The process of preparing translation files is simple and easy to learn, and the file generation is fast. The interface allows for the translation of multiple files simultaneously, eliminating concerns about consistency. Additionally, the software has export and import proofreading features. It operates smoothly and is much more reliable than Trados. There is no "Save" button on the interface because saving is automatic, eliminating concerns about unexpected interruptions such as power outages or system crashes. Although it started late and has a smaller market share, I highly recommend this software.
5. MemoQ resembles Dejavu in many ways. Initially, I had tried it a few times and found it promising, surpassing Dejavu in certain aspects, but still problematic due to the code. It is said to allow users of other CAT tools to transition directly to MemoQ, but I have not personally tested this.
6. Logoport, a free product by Lionbridge, is embedded within Word tools, but how it generates RTF files remains a mystery. It uses an online TM server, allowing multiple translators to work on the same file simultaneously and sharing the TM. This is a significant advantage of Logoport, along with its free usage. However, due to the online TM, which may be due to the servers being located abroad, there is a delay of a few seconds with each translation unit opening, leading to complaints from translators. The first time you see the analysis log file, you might be misled into thinking that the 100% matched segments do not require translation. In reality, Logoport analyzes untranslated files and extracts TM results from them. At first glance, it may seem that a large portion is matched, but it is actually "new words" that need translation. The method of calculating matched segments is reasonable and offers a higher match rate than Trados.
7. Wordfast is one of the few CAT tools that can compete with SDL Trados. The initial version, like Logoport, is embedded within Word, but it is not free. The translation results are as clean as those from Trados Workbench. The code of the cleaned files is very similar to Trados Clean or TM can be upgraded. The version released at the end of 2008 is much more advanced and is also an independent platform. The PM-generated files are in TXML format, generally requiring a connection to an online TM to retrieve matching segments, which is why pirated copies have not been found.
8. Transit is said to be widely used for translations between European languages, with Korean being the only Eastern language known to use it. Although it functions decently, it is麻烦 to operate. Obviously, there are other tools that can be used. Every time I encounter it, I get a headache. Additionally, the file can only be generated and exported to the target format on the PM side. The new NXT version has not been tested, so its performance is unknown.
9. Fanyi is a free tool that is simple and easy to use. Its translation interface is similar to that of Dejavu, but it also has code issues. The Google translation project has stipulated the use of the software (formerly known as Trados). The files sent for translation are created by the client, and the final translated files are also generated on the client side. The software's powerful features should not be underestimated.
10. Transmate is a series of Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools developed by Chengdu Youyi Information Technology Co., Ltd., which is currently the first domestically developed translation assistance software in China. Its single-machine version is free to use and can increase translation speed by 1.32 times, better suited to the habits of Chinese users, and more understanding of Chinese users.
