Yuyao lies in the south of Yangtze River Delta, with a long history and splendid culture. In 1985, Yuyao was updated from a county to a city, and in 1994, approved as a Grade-II city by the State Council. It is said that Yuyao is originally the feudality of Shun, one offspring of Shun, and thus got its name based on Shun’s surname Yao. As early as 7,000 years ago, Yuyao has cultivated the “Hemudu Culture”, which is now honored as one world culture treasure and also makes Yuyao win a reputation of one of the cradles of the Chinese Nation. In Qin Dynasty, the administrative county was established in Yuyao area. During the past history, Yuyao has been the birthplace of a large number of celebrities and scholars, such as Yan ZiLing, Wang Yangming, Zhu Shunshui, and Huang Zongxi, etc. Hence, Yuyao used to enjoy the titles of “the most famous county in the southeast” and “the well-known literature state.” And now it is a historical and cultural city of Zhejiang Province. Totally, Yuyao covers an area of 1,527 square kilometers, including 14 towns, 1 associate town, and 6 blocks. The total habitants are about 825.9 thousand.
Since the reform and opening to the outside world was launched, great achievement in Yuyao has been made in the economic and social development. For successive years, it has been listed in the top 100 counties (cities) with respect to the comprehensive strength in the country. In 2005, Yuyao ranks the 19th among all more than 2,000 counties and cities of China, with GDP of RMB29.2 billion, local financial income of RMB 4.037 billion, the governable income per head of urban residents of RMB17381, the pure income per head of peasants of 7661.
Yuyao’s industry is relatively developed, with a reputation of “the Homeland of the Plastic” and “the Kingdom of Models.” Now it has preliminarily established an industrial system, in which the traditional industries such as meters, electronics, plastics, chemical industry, textile form the industrial base while the hi-tech industries, i.e. electromechanical integration, new material, fine chemistry, etc, the leading industry. In addition, other industries, mostly in pen-making, keystokes, lamps, auto fittings, water-heating apparatus, electric tools, lighters, spread over the area in the form of block economy. The “Sacon ” and “Yuli” smoke exhauster and the “Fuda” vacuum cleaner have been awarded famous brand products of China.
Yuyao is rich in agricultural products, being crowned as “China Waxberry Country,” “China Preserved Pickle County,“ “China Jiaobai Country,” “China Honeydew Pear country,“ and “China Red Maple Country.” Yuyao has also some famous-brand agricultural products, i.e. “Waterfall” tea, “Shunshui” honeydew pear, “Guotai” and “Beidefu” preserved pickle, etc.
Yuyao is blessed with plenty of tourist resources. Major tourist sites include the Museum of Hemudu Relics superscribed by Mr. Jiang Zemin, the Siming Lake 2 times the size of West Lake in Hangzhou, Longquan Mountain with concentrated historic relics, Danshan Chishui scenic spot respected by Taoist as the Ninth Dongtian, Simingshan National Forest Park praised as the "Natural Oxygen Bar" and summer resort, and Jade Cultural Theme Park which occupies an area of 2,460 mou and recorded in Shanghai Guinness. Thanks to its unique features, Yuyao now has been a key tourist cities in Zhejiang Province, attracting more and more Chinese and foreign tourists.
Yuyao has good geographical advantages, 40 km east to the international seaport city of Ningbo, 120 km west to Hangzhou, and only 30 km to Hangzhou Bay Oversea Bridge under construction. Hence, Yuyao is crowned as the bridgehead on the south of Hangzhou Bay. In Yuyao, the transportation is very convenient with Hu-Hang-Yong expressway, 329 National Highway, Xiao-Yong Railway, and Hang-Yong Canal passing through the area.
