what is happiness

是一篇演讲稿,演讲时间为三到五分钟

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen! It’s my honor to give you my speech, and my topic is happiness. As to happiness, here is a legend in western culture; it says that anyone who can find a four-leaf-clover will get happiness. So do you think that I will tell you how to find a four-leaf-clover to make you happy? Obviously not, what I want to tell you is a story of mine which enlightened me about a true essence of happiness. The story began as I was walking with a friend near a clover-field. You know, my friend didn’t have the knowledge of clover, so he asked me its name. I told him it was clover and told him the legend. Then he was very curious about four-leaf-clover and eager to find one. In fact, I didn’t think he could find one, and I wanted to persuade him not to waste his time, but to my surprise, he really found one and thought it was very easy. Moreover, only a few minutes later, he pointed another one for me. Furthermore, I felt it unbelievable that I also found one soon. It shouldn’t have been such easy, and I was wondering why it wasn’t as difficult as I had thought to find one. Suddenly, as if a flash brighten my mind, I realized that four-leaf-clover is not a legend but a parable through which the ancestor wanted to remind us that happiness must be somewhere around us, and we should cherish it instead of ignoring it. As a survey on the Internet shows that more and more college students feel that they are unhappy, I think I should share my story with all of you. Well, so next time if you feel unhappy, why not just go out and try to find a four-leaf-clover? At last, I would like to end my speech by thanking you all. Thank you very much.

happyness
There is something in the world. It has no shape, no color and no weight. It can’t be seen or touched. But everyone wants it very much. People try to get it in many ways. Some people think money means it, so they try to make more money; some people believe that knowledge can bring it to them, so they study very hard; some other people find only good health can make themselves get it, so they take part in all kinds of sports and games. Now, you may ask what on earth the mysterious (神秘的)thing is. That’s HAPPINESS. I can’t give you the exact meaning of happiness, but I’m sure if you love and help others, you’ll get it.
I’ll never forget an old lady. She lives in a small house alone. It’s said that her husband and her son died in a traffic accident. What a sorrow life she has!But the old lady often helps others with a smile. Whenever it snows, she is always the first to clean the paths (小路). She looks after several children living nearby. I am one of them. I often remember the stories she told us and her kind smile. Perhaps she is unlucky, but I think she is a happy person. Her life is full of laughter and love.
But I’m sad to see some people getting their happiness in bad ways. They speak loudly in cinemas and meeting rooms; they destroy (损坏) trees to enjoy themselves and they laugh at others’ shortcomings. Perhaps they feel happy at that time, but they will never get true happiness because they have destroyed others’ happiness.
Now I know what happiness is. It means kindness, love and unselfishness. Above all, only bringing happiness to others can make yourself happy.

Happiness
Happiness is the most precious thing in the world, which can be obtained in different ways.
From my point of view, being in a good mood anytime and anywhere is the first thing for those who want to be happy. There is an old saying going like this, "happy is he who is content." I can't agree with it any more. I still remember a story my mother told me when I was a child. A millionaire tried every means to seek after pleasure but to feel unhappy. It's not unique, but has its counterpart that poor men to whose name not having a thing always feel happy. Why are they so different? The answer is that the rich is being thinking how he can gain more while the poor is satisfied with what he owns at hand-health, freedom, love and so on.
Furthermore, love makes great difference to happiness. If you have love in your heart, you will have happiness in your life. Love consists of two parts, one is to love others, and the other is to be loved by others. Lei Feng set a good example for all of us. He served the people wholeheartedly until the last minute of his life. He regarded serving the people as the happiest thing. There are numbers of similar inspirational stories to be found. In addition, being loved by others can also lead you to happiness. Courage from your parents when frustrated, care from your lover when ill, help from your friends when in trouble… all of these will make you the happiest person in the world.
The last but not least is to act happily. Putting on a happy face and thinking interesting things are helpful to trigger happy feelings.
Wile happiness is precious, it is easy to get.

What is Happiness?

A puzzling situation:
Billy won the lottery. A cool $25 million! He appeared to be a good man with a good character. Of the many types of people who might have won, his friends were happy it was Billy. But two years later he was arrested for drunk driving, resisting arrest, soliciting a prostitute, and having drugs in his car. The arrests continued over the next few years. The excitement of winning did not grow into a lifelong happiness.
Tom, a successful businessman, was a loner who worked long hours, saving and re-investing most of his profits. He was disliked for his independence and envied for his wealth. Yet his was a life full of contentment and happiness. Why does wealth bring happiness to some and misery to others?
If wealth is not a shortcut to happiness, what about sacrificing for others? Terry volunteers at the soup kitchen 6 days /week, 52 weeks a year, but hates it, hates her life, and has grown especially bitter towards the people she serves. Dora, an engineer, never does volunteer work. If she gives to charity, she does so very selectively and sparingly. Acquaintances envious of her success call her selfish. Yet Dora is very happy.
There are many people who we think should be happy but are not. (Billy the "lucky" lottery winner and Terry the "serious" volunteer.)
There are many people who we think should be miserable but are not. (Tom the "loner" businessman and Dora the "selfish" engineer.)
Some people who seem to have nothing are very happy. Some people who seem to have everything are not. Some jet-setters seem happy while some moral crusaders have become miserable old grouches. Happiness seems very unpredictable, inconsistent, irrational.
What follows is an explanation as to the rational basis of happiness.

Happiness
Happiness is an emotion. So is sadness, love, hate, curiosity, revulsion, excitement, jealousy, contentment, depression, anxiety, fear, guilt and anger. All emotions have causes, causes which can be understood and controlled.
The emotion of happiness is not caused simply by entertaining your whims. (Whims are an obstacle to happiness.) Happiness is not merely a life lived by accumulating moments of pleasure. On the contrary, happiness is a long lasting enduring enjoyment of life, it is being in love with living. It is your reward for achieving a good character and personal rational values in life. Some important values are a productive career, romance, friendship and hobbies.
Achieving these values requires rationality and takes effort and skill. Two types of skills you can use are thinking skills and valuing skills.
Once you learn to have confidence in your own mind and once you discover the virtues that make it possible for you to achieve your values and that make your life worth living, then you will experience the result - an earned pride and a genuine self-esteem. And of course happiness.

Different people give different defines to happiness. From the dictionary, we can know that happiness is to feel or express pleasure, contentment, satisfaction, etc. When we are very busy or earn money crazily,we gradually forget what the happiness is. We don’t understand what the true feeling of happiness is. Maybe you say that I have money so that I am a happy man. Maybe you say that I have friends so that I am a happy man. Maybe you say that I get a good mark today so that I am a happy man. Maybe you say that I get a high salary so that I am a happy man. Many things can make you happy. But the happiness last very short. IF you get happiness, you can share it to others. Even if you are not happy now, you can also recall the happy feeling. Living on this world, it is not easy to feel true happiness.本回答被网友采纳
