水体污染影响工业生产、增大设备腐蚀、影响产品质量，甚至使生产不能进行下去。

水的污染，又影响人民生活，破坏生态，直接危害人的健康，损害很大，其中泡沫污染性很强。

例如大气变污浊、水质变差、废弃物堆积、噪声、振动、恶臭等对环境的破坏都属环境污染。由于环境污染，从而导致日照减弱，气候异常，山野荒芜，土壤沙化、盐碱化，草原退化，水土流失，自然灾害频繁，生物物种绝灭等。

环境污染的实质是人类活动中将大量的污染物排入环境，影响其自净能力，降低了生态系统的功能。
