Xiao Hong is a legendary modern writer leading a miserable life. Her short life is full of re-allocation, separation and sadness. According to the traditional view, "motherhood" has been regarded as the sacred, high and holy calling, which calls for selfless sacrifice and dedication of women. Xiao Hong "gashes" that glorified image enveloping "motherhood" and exposes its exploitative nature. The mother figures in her novels are not only physically unattractive, most of them are trapped in loveless marriages, and stuck in the role of "child-bearing machine", like animals. Often they are pushed to the edge of life and death, being treated as "objects" and crushed. These women are selfish, callous and cruel mothers. Xiao Hong's personal experience has a lot to do with her perception of traditional motherhood, which she resent. Her mother died when she was young. She has tragically experienced proverty and abandonment. Xiao Hong's writings reflect her awakening to her own female consciousness and self-realization. At the end of this paper, the implicit meaning in Xiao Hong's depiction of motherhood will be explored in depth. Xiao Hong's works contest the male-centered appropriation of the female body to serve a nationalist discourse, reveal the cause for womenâs unfortunate fate, and contraints of their "assigned" reproductive role, which consists of child-bearing and nuturing. These novels call for maternal consciousness. Notwithstanding the vivid depiction of the tragic destiny of women, Xiao Hong has not offered a solution. The signifcance of Xiao Hong's works lies in breaking the shackles that have been chained to women for thousands of years, and it takes courage and integrity to break the silence.
