Harvard Law School has two offices dedicated to helping students learn about career options and pursue positions. The Office of Career Services primarily covers the private sector -- including law firms, in-house counsel positions, business careers, alternative legal careers, and judicial clerkships. The Bernard Koteen Office of Public Interest Advising (OPIA) covers the public sector -- including nonprofits, government, all types of public international work, and private public interest law firms -- and fellowships.
Since many students consider and indeed may pursue both private and public sector options during their careers, the offices work closely together. Because of their ability to focus on particular sectors, both OPIA and OCS have developed expertise and connections in their respective fields and thus offer students and alumni the best of both worlds.
