Inearly1971,whileworkingonanadvertisingcampaignforacorporateclient,Hargreavesdoodledacharacterwithexceptionallylongarms.Hethoughtitcouldbeadaptedforachildren'sbook.Anoft-repeatedstoryprovidesanalternativeversioninwhichthefigurecameaboutafterHargreavesaskedhisseven-year-oldsonAdam:‘Whatdoesaticklelooklike?’Theboy'sreplyissaidtohavegivenhimtheideaforalong-armedcharacter.Attractiveasthisstoryis,AdamHargreaveshasnorecollectionoftheincident,suggestingthatthetruegenesisofhisfather'scharacterswasacombinationofmanyconcurrentideas.
AmeetingbetweenHargreavesandJackThurman,directorofthepublishersFabbriandPartnersLtd,ledinAugust1971tothelaunchofsixbookscalledthe‘Mr’series.ThelaunchtitleswereMrBump,MrGreedy,MrHappy,MrNosey,MrSneeze,andMrTickle(Hargreaves'soriginaldoodledcharacter),withbookspricedat20pence.AFabbripressrelease(29July1971)identifiedtheMrbooksas‘simpleentertainmentforchildrenfromagethreetoeight,whetherreadersorlisteners.The“Mr”characters,whoseadventuresarehumorous,allhavenormalhumanfrailtieswithwhichdifferentpersonalitiesmayidentify.’Hargreaveslateraddedthathislackofaformalarttrainingmeantthat‘Ican'tdrawproperlysoIhavetokeepitsimple.I'mmuchtoolazytowriteanovel,soshortstoriesareidealforme’(interviewforBootsMagazine,spring1982).Thisconceptwasalso,tosomeextent,theresultofHargreaves'sadvertisingexperiencewhichusedclarityanddirectnesstoappealtoatargetaudience.TheMrserieswasanimmediatesuccess,andsixmoretitleswerequicklyaddedtotherange.In1974thebookswererebrandedfollowingameetingbetweenHargreavesandRichardCulleyofthelicensingagencyCopyrightPromotions.ItwasCulleywhoproposedthename‘MrMen’bywhichtheybecameuniversallyknown.
Thelicensingofachildren'scharacterbrandwasinitsinfancyinBritainatthisperiod.However,Hargreaves—alerttothecommercialsuccessofcharacterssuchasSnoopy—wassufficientlyambitiousandbusiness-mindedtoidentifyhiscreation'spotential,andsoldtherightstothird-partyclientsforuseontheirproducts.RichardCulleybeganlicensingtheMrMenproperty,andarangeofpartnershipswasformedwhichsawMrTickleandfriendsappearonchildren'sclothing,bedding,foodstuffs,stationery,toys,andceramicitems.Inthisway,Hargreaves'scharactersacquirednewlivesawayfromthebooksandgainedwidespreadrecognitionwhich,inturn,fuelleddemandforhistitles.InresponseHargreavesaddednewcharacterstotherange,writingandillustratingatotalofforty-threeMrMenbooks.
In1975aMrMencartoonserieswasscreenedbytheBBC,narratedbytheactorArthurLowe(twenty-six7.5minuteepisodesweremadebyMisterFilms).Thecharactersalsofeaturedduringthe1980sinaDailyMirrorcomicstrip.In1977Hargreavesleftadvertisinganddevotedhimselffull-timetowritingandillustratingtheMrMenbooks,aswellasdesigningfortheever-growingrangeofmerchandisewhichderivedfromthecharacters'success.ArequestfromhisAmericanpublisherledtothelaunch,in1981,oftheLittleMisscharacters,includingLittleMissTiny,LittleMissBossy,andLittleMissSunshine,specificallydesignedtoappealtoyounggirls.Hargreavescreatedthirtybooksforthisrange.ALittleMisstelevisionseries,narratedbyJohnAldertonandPaulineCollins(thirteen7.5minuteepisodes,againmadebyMisterFilms),followedin1983.InadditiontohisMrMenandLittleMisscharacters,Hargreavesalsocreatedseverallesswell-knowncharacters,notablyHippo,Potto,andMouse(1976),andTimbuctoo(1978).
By1981some31millioncopiesoftheMrMenandLittleMissbookshadbeensoldintheUnitedKingdomaloneand,asthefulleffectoflicensingthecharacterswasrealized(fromanestimated700products),Hargreavesachievedthe1988Europeanlicensingaward‘Foroutstandingcontributiontothelicensingindustry’.Intheworldofchildren'slicensedcharacters,veryfewcreationsprosperformorethanfiveyearsandthosethatdo,likeMrMenandLittleMiss,becomeclassics.Theirsuccess,thenandnow,liesintheage-olddesireforenquiryintohumannature.Hargreavesdescribedfamiliarchildhoodsituationsthatareasrecognizabletodayaswhenhefirstdevisedthem.Certainlyhisprosestylecanbestiltedandrepetitive,andhisplotshavelittledepth.Likewisehisillustrations,whichhaveanavequalityandarebereftofdetail,areessentiallyvariationsonacirclefilledwithsolid,flatcolour.However,Hargreaves'sskillwastocreatecharacterswhichcapturesharedemotions:whatchildcannotfailtorelatetothetrips,falls,andslipsofMrBump,beinquisitiveaboutLittleMissCurious,orsmilealongwithacharacternamedMrHappy?Theirappealalsoextendedbeyondchildren.InJune1983,forexample,MrHappy'simagewasadoptedtopromotethecityofGlasgow,undertheslogan‘Glasgow'smilesbetter’.Thecampaign,oneofthebest-rememberedpromotionsofaBritishcity,ranuntil1989,andwasgivenasecondairingin1994.
