English is obviously the American language. Why is it called "British English" instead?

If the English language is the official language of America, why is it called "English"?

The relationship is reversed. The English language was first passed down to America by the British during its colonization of the country. As time goes by, however, Americans have made various modifications to the language, thus creating what we call American English today. In fact, British colonization had transformed many other countries into English-speaking countries.
