1、ago是表示在某个时间以前，
例句：A few years ago.几年以前
About two years ago.差不多两年以前。

有时要根据语境来改变单词的意思，例如：Heroes of long ago。古代英雄。

2、而earlier是early的比较级，表示早的。如果是与前面的某些事物相比较的话，在它后面就会加上than，不过有时候也会有特殊，不过是在它表示别的意思的时候。它的意思也要根据语境来看。
例如：He came earlier than usual。他比平常早来。
Do you mind retiring earlier？早点儿退休你介意吗？
Can you make it earlier?你能提早一点吗？
3、before，应注意两点：(1)它用于过去完成时或现在完成时，用于have/has/had 后面. (2)它所指的时间不是从现在算起，而是从过去某一时刻算起，有时可以与previously换用
例如：
Last summer, I finally left the firm that I had joined eighteen years before.
