帮忙做下英语试题: Applications:
1.Put brackets around the immediate constituents in the sentence :The girl ate the apple.
2.Use one example to show a way to extend a sentence.
3.Give one example to show how flouting the maxim of quantity gives rise to conversational implicature.
4.Analyze the sentence by identifying the Subject and Predicate on the first level Theme and Theme and Rheme on the secnod level.
5.In the following conversation between A and B,what maxim is violated apparently? What is B's implicature?
A:Mrs.X is an old bag.
B:The music is great!

1. Answer: ((The girl)) (ate ((the apple))).
2. Answer: He likes the shirt. → He likes the shirt his mother bought him yesterday.

3. Answer:
This maxim says:
 Make your contribution as informative as is required (for the current purposes of the exchange).
 Do not make your contribution more informative than is required.
Example:
Background: A man stops his vehicle in the middle of the road to briefly ask you for directions.
A: Where is the post office?
B: There are two in town, but the closest one is brand new. Down the road, about 50 metres past the second left. Also, you shouldn’t stop your car in the middle of the road anymore.
Or: Not far.
Neither answer is proper, because A carries more information required and B insufficient. A proper answer would be: Continue on, and make the second left up there. You’ll see it.
4. My reply: Which sentence? You have failed to provide a sentence!
5. Answer:
The maxim that is violated is that of relation. B’s reply to A’s words is not relevant. B does this for the purpose of implying that he does not agree with A about his/her comment on Mrs X, or he is not at all interested in such a topic of conversation.
