There was an old man known as the Foolish Old Man. His house was in the big mountainsTwo big mountains stood in front of his house,one was Wang Wu,the other was Tai Hang.Every day,when he went to farm,he had to take a lot of time to get out of the mountains.
One evening, the old man asked his two sons,"l am going to get the two mountains outof the way, what do you think about it? OK,let's do it today!"Now parents and their sons anddaughters were digging the big mountains.
Seeing this, a man known as the Wise Man laughed at their efforts,"You are old andweak,how can you remove the big mountains?"
"I can dig every day. When I die,there will be my sons, who will have their sons andgrandsons. Those grandsons will have their sons and grandsons, and so on to infinity. But thebig mountains will be smaller and smaller, so I can certainly level them."
创作背景：
战国时期是一个社会大变革的时期，同时也是学术思想百家争鸣的时期。寓言作为诸子散文的重要组成部分，成为了战国诸子阐明各自的政治观点、学术思想以及进行论辩的有力武器。《列子》即是在这样一个时代背景下，所产生的寓言和神话故事集。
《列子》的原著在西汉以后便已散失。近代以来，多数学者认为，魏晋间人聚敛缀合秦汉典籍，又附益纬书、佛典之说，成此《列子》八篇。
此文即选自《列子·汤问》第五章，讲述的是愚公不畏艰难挖山不止，最终感动天帝而将山挪走的故事，亦说明在当时生产力极不发达的条件下，人们只能幻想借助具有超人力量的神来实现征服自然的愿望。
