定语是用来修饰名词或代词的。一般放在这两种词的后面。那么修饰名词或代词的句子叫定语从句，一般也放在这一名词或代词后面。被修饰词叫先行词。
状语是用来修饰动词，形容词，副词或整个句子的。那么修饰动词的句子就是状语从句。即用来说明动作发生的时间，地点，原因，方式，条件等等。它要放在主句前或后。如下面这些例子。
The book that /which I bought is very interesting.
I will never forget the days when we worked together.
Those who have finished your work may leave now. 以上三句都有一定语从句。分别修饰了三个词，the book,/ the days /those.
下面是状语从句的例子
When I was walking in the street, I met one of my friend.

when where if whether.......引导的是状语从句，状语嘛，就是状态，在什么环境下做的动作。
I liked that cat when I was a child.状态是：小时候。我小时候喜欢那只猫。
that which who.......引导的是定语从句，“定”是“确定、指定”的意思，没有它就不知道具体指的是什么。is white.若没有that后面的，就可以理解为我喜欢猫咪，不论什么颜色的。
