very much bound up with difference of place.
Earlier work by Deem (cited in Deem, 1996a)
suggested that when holidaying away from
home `working class' women's experiences
were less well matched with their expectations
than were those of `middle class' women.
Although all women appeared to have some
dif®culty freeing themselves of `domestic
responsibilities' (such as care of others), this
was most acute in the case of `working class'
women; accommodation was more likely to be
unserviced, for instance. In all cases women
holidaying with families appeared to have
some responsibility for maintaining harmony,
often by giving their own preferences a low
priority. Deem (1996a) saw holidays as `a
device for slowing down the pace of life' (p.21), although holidays were not self-evidently
an escape from `paramount reality' (Cohen
and Taylor, 1992) and were often, for women,
stressful and less-than-ideal.
Davidson (1996), in her Australian study of
holidays of women with young children,
concluded that although `rest' could result
from holidaying at home the real reduction in
pressure lay in being away from home. All of
her informants acknowledged that going away
entailed extra work and women continued to
work while on holiday, including creating and
maintaining harmony. Nonetheless `every wo-
man I talked to indicated that, on the whole,
family holidays require less work, less effort
than the normal routine' (Davidson, 1996, p.95).
